Shubham Rashtrapal Gedam, b. 1993 in Nagpur, studied ceramics at Sir J.J. School of Art Mumbai.

After graduating, he began his professional career in the ceramic industry within the field of production pottery, perfecting his skills through constant throwing, researching and experimenting with glaze recipes all whilst monitoring quality control of each piece leaving the studio. Throughout these years he was able to amass an in-depth understanding on all the technical aspects of clay whilst putting this knowledge into practice within his own artistic exploration. In 2022, Shubham then arrived at Dharamkot Studio to live and work now utilising his knowledge and talents by leading the technical support in the studio for all participating potters, instructors, students and artists.

Artist Statement: As a multidisciplinary artist, Shubham seamlessly integrates his extensive knowledge of diverse materials into his multimedia artworks. Drawing direct inspiration from the textures inherent in nature, he channels these influences into sculptural creations that harmonise with their surroundings while commanding attention. His artistic pursuit revolves around capturing the untamed essence of the natural world, evident in the distinctive asymmetry of his forms and the rugged, unrefined textures he employs. Shubham’s enduring fascination with clay, rooted in his childhood experiences of playful interaction, remains a driving force in his artistic journey. The medium’s unique ability to evoke joy and creativity has propelled him toward a dedicated career in ceramics, allowing him to maintain a connection to his youthful enthusiasm.

Embracing a variety of creation techniques—slip casting, coiling, wheel throwing, slab building, and hand building—Shubham’s approach defies stagnation. His deliberate avoidance of stylistic complacency fosters continual growth, resulting in progressively intricate and audacious sculptures. Currently, Shubham is expanding his horizons by incorporating mixed media elements into his ceramic works. His mastery of materials such as wood, metal, and stone lends depth and dimension to his creations, while preserving the intrinsic authenticity of each component. With his glazing techniques, he deliberately employs matte finishes to ensure the focus remains on the essence of the artwork itself, eschewing distractions and allowing the rawness of the materials to shine through.
