‘Whisper’ is an individual sculptural piece in devotion to handbuilding, particularly through the use of traditional coiling techniques—an integral method woven into the fabric of all my creations.

Coil by coil the whole structure slowly rose up from the work surface then, using the method of beating, a direction was given to the clay. Patience became the cornerstone as I manipulated bulges and curves, closely monitoring drying times. Each section demanded precision, requiring a delicate balance between the clay’s pliability to shape its rounded attributes and strength in order for it to not buckle under its own weight.

Observe the sculpture’s distinctive undulations, gracefully transitioning from wide to narrow, a challenging feat due to its slender base. The continuous monitoring and careful touch was necessary to ensure the structure maintained its form while standing freely. Upon reflection, the piece evokes a myriad of emotions—its delicate female form juxtaposed against the sense of something straining to break free in the narrow neck.

Employing a combination of two oxides, I achieved a captivating gradient effect. Much like my dynamic relationship with clay, the post-kiln revelation took on a life of its own, surprising me with a metallic effect on the top and a vibrant green at the bottom. These effects harmonise, compelling the viewer to focus on different aspects of the undulating form, creating an engaging visual narrative.
