The last leaf
₹6,500.00
This vase is inspired by O’ Henry’s short story “The last leaf”— a story of a patient who believes that when the ivy vine on the wall outside her window loses all its leaves, she would die too. But then her artist friend tricks her by painting an ivy leaf and places it on her wall which keeps her going and she recovers.
When I first heard this as a curious young child, the story had me wondering what ivy looked like, I used to believe it to be so special and almost divine! Having had no access to the internet during the days of my childhood, the Ivy plant remained a mystery. Years later, I accidentally found it marked in a botanical garden. To my pleasure I realised various kinds of the very ubiquitous Ivy plant have always been there, beautifully growing everywhere around my hometown.
The ivy’s delicate tendrils and graceful curves are a symbol of everlasting love and devotion, making this vase extremely special to me and a perfect gift for a loved one.
On this wheel-thrown slender ceramic terracotta vase, I have used the technique of sgraffito to achieve an almost 3D image of wild Ivy. Hand painted with variegated greens, the leaves are then glazed to show off a shimmering finish.
Just like the wild vine found amongst nature, its sleek curves wrap around the unglazed surface of the pot, the rawness of the terracotta earthiness emulating that of a mud wall. It took almost 14 days to get to the final look it exhibits that makes it so exquisite.
