“Free Me From The Dark Side” expresses the ever so familiar feeling of loneliness and longing for a break from the harsh cyclical reality of life. Inside the cup transcribes a conversation between the artist and her friend. The friend is checking in on the artist, from whom she did not hear for a long time. The artist says she’s ‘ok’, but in reality she’s looking for someone to save her from the darkness. Unfortunately in this scenario, she does not know how to ask for help, even when help is standing right in front of her.

In the depths of my own personal struggles with anxiety and depression, I have felt this sense of disillusionment with reality. Feeling isolated in a crowd or totally alone amongst friends is one of the many costs of dealing with such mental illnesses and one that I am trying to bring awareness to through “Free Me From The Dark Side” . I hope to express that there is comfort in knowing that your loneliness is not one of isolation but of a shared experience and to urge people to reach out for help when help is close by.

“Free Me From The Dark Side”  was carefully crafted out of stoneware clay using the handbuilding technique known as slab-building. The clay is then folded in a way that compliments the illustration as the folds almost mimic the texture of paper creating a lively doodled-on effect to the overall look of the piece.

“Free Me From The Dark Side”  can be used as a cup, small vase or a pen stand. This series of small ceramic pots are multi-functional to suit all your decorative needs. This stoneware piece is decorated with under-glaze illustrations and then finished with a transparent glaze and fired to 1200 degrees.
